Contact lenses for children

Is my child old enough to wear contact lenses?”

This is one of the biggest concerns that parents have about contact lenses for their children.

Physically the eyes can tolerate contact lenses at a very young age.  Some babies are fitted with contact lenses due to eye conditions present at birth.

What parents are really asking “Is my child mature enough to wear contact lenses?”

  • Children are naturally great contact lens wearers if they accept the responsibility for them.  They adapt well to wearing the lenses due to their flexible personalities. They also tend to follow instructions better than adults. Children often want contact lenses for many of the same reasons adults do, including appearance, comfort and improved vision. Contact lenses can do wonders for your child’s self esteem.
  • Contact lenses may be a safer option than glasses for sports. Your child will have better peripheral vision which may enhance your child’s sports performance.
  • Contact lenses are designed to fit each individual, no matter what age, so fitting your child should be no more difficult than fitting an adult. Our optometrists can help you make an informed decision as to whether contacts lenses are suitable for your child.
  • Contact lenses for children are available for either occasional wear or full time use. Daily disposable lenses are ideal for sports with no cleaning necessary.  For more regular wear, direct debit schemes are available that cover all the costs of lenses, solutions, appointments and even spectacle frames.
